I want to try Indian food… what would be good for me to start with?

I’ve been thinking about going to a local Indian restaurant.
I’ve never had Indian.
I can’t eat spicy food (sensitive tastebuds).
I’m curious, what would be a good thing to try for someone who has never had Indian food? I’m hesitant to ask at the restaurant because most of the time the people at these places have heavy accents, and/or don’t understand the questions I ask… and even if they do understand me, I have a hard time understanding them and feel bad for asking people to repeat themselves.

Good non spicy choices:
-Raita (yogurt mixed with vegetables, usually eggplant or cucumber. Usually served as a side dish to cool the mouth.)
-Mattar Palao (Rice cooked with peas and onion)
-Jeera Rice (Rice cooked with cumin seed, flavorful but not spicy)
-Naan (slightly leavened flat bread, VERY taste)
-Roti (Plain flat bread cooked with no fat on a griddle)
-Paratha (Very rich flat bread, lots of butter)
-The following curries are usually less spicy: Korma, Shahi, Makhani. They may come with various meats. Shahi means cooked in yogurt sauce, makhani is in butter. Korma is a sweeter curry that has raisins and is thickened with ground nuts.
-Palaak Paneer/Saag Paneer: saag is a curry made from greens (like spinach), palaak is the same but made only with spinach. Usually this is not very spicy hot.

Sometimes can be spicy:
-Biryani can be QUITE spicy, but I’m sure that if you emphasize “no spicy food” at the restaurant they’ll take care of you
-Dhal, or lentil curries, are the same way. Can be very spicy, but make your preference known and you’ll be fine.

Generally, if something says “teeka” that means spicy.

I’m sure you’ll enjoy desserts, non of those are spicy and Indian desserts are great. In any case, make sure to get a lassi (yogurt based drink) to cool your mouth during the meal. It will work better than water. Get sweet lassi, or mango one.
